ARMA 2: New content revealed Official

Some new information about the "Citizens of Chernarus" has been revealed on the ArmA2 official web site. Here is a YouTube video thanks to Kenwort.

Citizens of Chernarus

Proud people of Chernarus were divided by the civil war and its consequences. Majority of Chernarussian citizens are of Chernarussian nationality, with their own language and culture. There is also Russian ethnic minority living mainly in the northern territories, where Russian is second official language. People are also divided by their political alignments and sympathies.
Citizen

„Yes, I'm pretty sure 'twas him. Yeah, it might have been a group of guerillas in ghillie suits, but Sir, snipers surely wouldn't try to unscrew that Chedak's head!“
- from notes of Cpt. Dressler, Marine Corps Intelligence Activity

* Chernarussians are mostly villagers or foresters. City people from the coast work mainly in harbours and factories.
* After the civil war, life is equally boring everywhere: not much remains of the few cultural events and entertainment the distant Northern Province previously had to offer.
* Citizens are quite friendly to soldiers, sometimes even providing valuable intel. However, they rarely speak English, so knowledge of Chernarussian or Russian really helps.
* Causing any harm to the civilian population could lead to a loss of support and hostility towards the soldiers. Improper behavior towards the local women might cause a very rude response.
* Chernarussian Bigfoot is often said to be spotted in the mountains of Northern Chernarus.

New ArmA II Preview and Video Official

Yesterday our colleague telejunky from the ArmAbase.de team stumbled upon a new non-english preview about ArmA 2 on the Arma2.com website. While visiting the website a few minutes ago we have discovered that BIS has stated that they will release new footage/information on a regular base, so we advise you to visit Arma2.com from time to time. The first released video is about the USMC in ArmA 2.

United States Marine Corps

USMC deployment in Chernarus consists of 27th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), which is supposed to overturn the balance in the civil war in the favor of Chernarussian government. Marines are skilled in assymetrical warfare and are backed up by superior weapons and technology.
USMC

- Marines wear MARPAT camouflage and are equipped with state-of-the-art personal weapons: M16A4 assault rifles, M4 carbines, SAW and M240 machineguns and many other special-purpose weapons.
- Standard part of ground forces are LAV-25 light armored personel carriers, tracked AAV armored personel carriers, and M1A2 Abrams tanks.
- Standard assortment of aircraft contains MV-22 Osprey transport convertoplanes, MH-60S Seaknight and UH-1Y Venom transport helicopters. Super Cobra assault choppers and F-35 VTOL fighters fly in attack and CAS roles.
- Force Reconnaisance detachment is assigned to 27th MEU to provide extra support to operation Harvest Red. Men of Force Recon have exquisite training for recon and surveillance missions, direct actions deep in enemy territory as well as dealing with local population.
- Marines in field rely on many advanced weapon platforms: Predator unmanned aerial vehicles, MLRS rocket artillery and many more

Also here is the non-english preview + video (with unseen ingame footage) found by the telejunky. All credit goes out to ArmAbase.de

ARMA II - UH-1Y Venom In-Game Sounds Official

Maruk has released two unedited sound samples on the BI Forums. They reveal improved interior and exterior sounds for the UH-1Y Venom in game.

Maruk, again. Thank you for your feedback to my previous post about ArmA II UH-1Y Venom in-game screenshots .

As you are already familiar with visual style and quality of Arma 2, I want to give you preview of another important aspect of the game, sound, that will probably be not getting that much attention from various popular gaming media sources (which I am confident will be providing a lot of coverage in coming months about Arma 2).

I admit that sound was not very strong asset in first Arma (and in fact, the sound system used in Real Virtuality 2 engine didn't change much from OFP, except moving from DirectSound3D to OpenAL) but we are aiming to change it dramatically this time. Sound improvements wasn't too obvious from our GC live demos (partly because of the loud environment on the show and partly because the sound part of the game is not really complete yet).

Two audio samples attached, as usually, these are genuine in-game sound recordings - my word for it . (Note that this sound fidelity is result of real-time combination of 44 different audio samples just for the engine/rotor take off and landing sequence of UH1, using our brand new flexible and powerful sound system implemented in Arma 2)

OFP/Arma/Arma2 Vehicle and soldier engine comparison Official
Here are some interesting screenshots showing comparison between OFP, Arma 1 and Arma 2 engines. On the first row you can see the Mi-24 from OFP, next to the Arma 1 Mi-8 and Arma 2 Mi-24.
On the second row you can see the OFP, Arma 1 and Arma 2 Humvees, then the soldiers in the 3 games !

Of course graphics is not what makes a game good or not but it is still impressive to see quality's progression since 2001 !

  ArmA2 Vegetation progress Official

Jan Hovora from Bohemia Interactive has released a new article about ArmA2 Vegetation progress on the BI Developer Blog.
This new entry is about :
- New shaders,
- Change in engine,
- Visual aspect of vegetation,
- Clutter (grass surfaces),
- Future.
And tells us some nice things about ArmA2 WIP such as :

From lessons that we learned about the performance impact of trees, we developed a new way of making a grass model that is more effective for drawing than in Armed Assault but looks much denser and better visually. This is also based on the knowledge that in the first lods we must target on surface reduction and in far lods on vertex reduction, because far lods are drawn with a very limited amount of pixels.
There is also a nice change in the engine, where we can now particularly colorize vegetation clutters by satellite map, this allows us to produce non-repetitive surface with a more realistic look that naturally fits to the landscape ...

ArmA 2 Expectations on BIS Dev Blog Official

MattRochelle has informed us about a new article on the BIS site announcing new ARMA2 features that should be expected!

Compared to ARMA, we're concentrating on the following improvements for ARMA 2:

- Campaign with RPG elements, and with a story combined with dynamic events
- Improved AI, especially in Close Quarter Battles
- AI using taunts and hand signals for coordination and increased immersion
- Much more realistic terrain, based closely on real world data
- Optimizations for dual/multi core systems
- Console and PC release

And as usual, there are some changes which are perhaps not that important, but we still hope they will help to make ARMA 2 a more enjoyable game.

- Increased facial detail
- Increased vegetation detail
- Ambient animals
- Improved building destruction (we will return to this in some future blog)

Read more on the BIS site here!
