  SITREP #00089 Screenshots

On January 13, 2015, Joris-Jan van 't Land has reported a SITREP #00089 on the official Arma 3 web site.

FROM: Project Lead
TO: Arma 3 Users
INFO: Update en-route, Job opportunities, Localization
PRECEDENCE: Flash

SITUATION

We've begun prep for the first game update of this year: version 1.38. It will mostly be a maintenance update, gathering up all improvements, optimizations and fixes since the last update. However, we're also trying to include two things that can help many of you. Before going over them, we should point out that these are risky low-level changes. We'll be testing them more before making the final call. If they resolve one issue, but cause new ones, we may send them back to the incubator.

First of all, we're updating the PhysX libraries to version 3.2.4. PhysX is used throughout the game for the physical simulation of vehicles, objects and at times, characters. It's a third-party solution, developed by our partner NVIDIA, that we and many other games are using. There are also risks associated with this middleware approach, such as crashes occurring in, what is to us, a blackbox. Our programmers often cannot trace what has caused a crash when it happens in these libraries. We then try to debug with the engineers at NVIDIA, which can result in: us implementing a work-around on our side, them updating the libraries, or the issue not being solvable for a while. Initial tests using the new update have addressed a number of common crashes, so we hope it will help with stability. Note: for now this library update is not available for Linux servers, because some distributions don't support it (but the versions are cross-compatible).

Secondly, we'll reintroduce multiplayer server optimizations that were removed from a previous update. They have the potential to help quite a lot with performance, but in their first implementation were not fully 'thread-safe'. This second iteration looks much better, so we hope to see similar results as to when we first tested it, minus the crashes!

On a musical note: pump up your volume and listed to this cool unofficial metal cover of the Arma 3 main theme by Johari!

INTELLIGENCE

Bohemia Interactive is often searching for new recruits to join its multiple teams and offices. For Arma 3, we are currently on the look-out for (Audio) Programmers, Artists, Animators and a Mastering Developer. If you're interested in contributing to the future of Arma (or our other games), go over the careers page and apply!

OPERATIONS

Localization: the act of preparing a game for the many regions of the world and languages spoken therein. We will not lie: this can be quite a frustrating task for developers. Every piece of text must be stored in a database, rather than just having literal strings in code, script, scenarios, etc. Exports from these databases are then send to translators, who send back translations and those are re-integrated into the game. Of course, if this allows more people to enjoy the game, that's a good thing! For Arma 3, the process is coordinated by Associate Producer Tomáš Bican. He is not directly embedded in the team, but part of a shared Production department and important for every big release.

Our normal process is for the team to add texts to the database whenever they are needed. At some point between the internal Alpha and Beta milestones, we then apply a Localization Lock. From this point, it is expected about 90% of the texts are final and ready for translation. The database is exported for translation, and the real fun begins. Tomáš then has to track the inevitably forgotten and fixed texts and make sure those are translated on time. He'll also need to contact developers to find out more about the context of texts for translators. A single word can mean completely different things when used in different places. Admittedly, this is where things could go better for us. We're aware that there exist, at time hilarious, linguistic errors for some languages. When he's not fixing such errors and going through the standard procedures, Tomáš is searching for better methods, extra translation agencies or investigating non-traditional approaches for the future.

LOGISTICS

The Dev-Branch for Arma 3 Tools has received a small update. You'll find a sample of an extension there as a Visual Studio 2013 project. Extensions are advanced ways of extending the game with code written in languages such as C++ or C#. One common example of their usage is communication with databases for persistent multiplayer game modes. We're also happy to report that Tools Commissar Julien Vida has now joined us on-site as a full-time team member. Bienvenue!

Arma 3 Beta : Steam Workshop integration Screenshots

On Thursday 15th August 2013, Korneel van 't Land has informed us about Steam Workshop integration as well as
Arma 3 new screenshots release.

Before the official launch of Arma 3 on September 12, Bohemia Interactive has published a final update for the Arma 3 Beta. The absolute highlight of this update is the integration of Steam Workshop – which makes the sharing of user-created scenarios significantly more convenient.

Now, with Steam Workshop content sharing, players can upload and download both singleplayer and multiplayer scenarios. Arma 3’s in-game scenario editor is a powerful tool, allowing for the quick creation of missions, as well as more complex scenarios. Enhanced gameplay modules make life easier for aspiring designers to get started without having to learn the scripting language.

Having created a scenario, players can easily push it to the Workshop with a description and overview image. Other players can browse the Workshop for a scenario that looks appealing to them and subscribe to it. This will download the scenario and let players start it without restarting the game. Interacting with the author is made easy: players can leave comments, give a rating and updates are automatically downloaded. Authors themselves can post update notes and promote their scenarios with screenshots and videos.

Designer and Workshop caretaker, Jiří Zlatohlávek, expands:
“Even though we are dedicated to support the traditional ways of sharing content, used by many of the popular community portals - in the fast and easy to use world of app stores, streaming services and real-time feeds, we felt that sharing user content could be improved. What we see in the Workshop is a faster and easier way both for the creators to get their work out there to players and for the players to find and try it while providing feedback and encouragement, where it's needed the most.”

The last update for the Arma 3 Beta also includes a long list of other improvements and fixes (overview here), and will be downloaded automatically via Steam.

Last but not least, as part of the countdown to launch, and Gamescom, Bohemia Interactive has released 9 brand new screenshots featuring the 290 km˛ island of Altis. The studio invites everyone to their Gamescom booth in the public area, located in Hall 9.1, C-32.

  SITREP #00014 Screenshots

Today, Joris-Jan van 't Land has released a SITREP #00014 on the offical ArmA III website:

reported
by Joris-Jan van 't Land
on Tuesday 4th June 2013

FROM: Project Lead
TO: Alpha Users
INFO: Livestreams, Beta reveals, final Alpha patch
PRECEDENCE: Flash
SITUATION

Our last week before E3 2013 and the build is pretty much ready to go. Then there are a few mad weeks of tweaks, fixes and polish before the Beta release. We're feeling good about the package. There will be no Altis just yet, but you're getting a load of new firepower and logistical assets: 4 helicopters, 2 wheeled armored units, trucks, a whole bunch of new weapons and the first part of the Green faction. Next to that 4 showcases and more playable content to be shown at E3.

Last weekend we hosted our very first Arma 3 livestreaming event on Twitch.tv. It was rather improvised and casual, but fun to do and we hope you've seen and heard things you liked. Understandably the 'tutorial' aspect was not necessary for seasoned players, but keep in mind there are a lot of players who did not yet tinker with the editor. The ability to quickly set up a scenario is one of the things we find key to Arma and so we want to show it off when we can. This was also a trial run before we play through a Beta showcase featuring more content this coming Saturday. Some members of the previous cast will be flying to LA that day, and some new faces join the fray live.

INTELLIGENCE

Lord Master Petr Kolář configures the spotlight onto himself and his role as Encoding Lead in another episode of the 'Report In!' developer interviews. The article also contains a look at the Marid Beta vehicle and some fancy behind-the-scenes diagnostics (numbers everywhere!).

After revealing work on BattlEye anti-cheat last week, some people asked why we are not using Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC). The thing is: we are not saying we will not include VAC at some point. Our first priority is getting BE running; also because of experiences gained with Arma 2. Then we still consider VAC as another (optional) layer of security for admins. It cannot be confirmed now.

Let's highlight three topics to come out of the first livestream: 3D optics, Steam Workshop and Altis:

The Beta will enhance certain weapon optics with a much nicer-looking 3D version. We are aware of a few known issues with this technique, but feel the benefits outweigh these massively. Your reaction to seeing them proves this!
Not long after Beta release we intend to enable scenario publication to Workshop. This is a huge step forward in sharing and discovering user content. We are integrating this in stages and starting with scenarios makes sense. Add-ons are trickier and we are not sure when we can support this yet (unlikely before the initial release).

Two primary concerns have been voiced so far: how it affects existing content providers and the license terms. We can try to address this in a blog later, but briefly: we honestly do believe there will always be an important place for websites sharing content. There are many ways to differentiate, evolve and offer things Workshop itself does not. Secondly, we are discussing options with Valve regarding the license terms for Arma 3, but to manage expectations: if that does not go through - you will need to accept the existing ones to use this functionality. In any case, we'd like to point out again that we are not stripping away the old methods of saving and loading scenarios. Workshop is an optional enhancement which we do believe massively benefits the user experience.
Altis will not be part of the Beta. We want to finish it more first and it will be worth the wait! There is a chance we will stage it on Development branch ahead of main release for testing.

OPERATIONS

The actual plan for Alpha is to release the final Alpha patch (0.60) tomorrow. This includes the Sniper Package and even the stance indicator. With regards to the latter, you may need to reset your profile to see it properly. Alternatively, wait for an interface positioning option coming with the Beta. After this patch we start 're-skinning' the Alpha to become the Beta over the next few weeks. This means changing the default interface color to Beta blue, updating logos and icons, and of course sneaking in the content.

LOGISTICS

Two reminders: the Arma 3 Alpha Lite ends June 18th and access codes become unusable then. Going to Beta, we will change the user profile paths and file names. If you really want to you can rename manually. We prefer you to test default settings again however.

Arma III: Studio visit and presentation Screenshots

Gazzara visited the Bohemia Interactive Studio's where Ivan Buchta
talked about the development process of ArmA 3.
The article covers the research that was done on Lemnos ( including some picures) and various other aspects of game-development research like the field-trip to a hungarian manufacturer to get the ballistics and firing sounds recorded.

“We are a Studio of big ambitions and like to produce games that other Publishers would look at as impossible” Ivan reveals to Gazarra over lunch with a demeanour that is down to earth, realistic yet passionate about the game he is helping to produce.

Bohemia Studio’s Arma division, operates out of the beautiful city of Brno, in the south of the Czech Republic and acts like a Behemoth from the outside, hitting heavy with Arma II, a military sim so steeped in operational realism that you would think the studio had 100 staff working tirelessly on the project.....
