BI Forum update + Community Awards 2008 Official

On the "old" BI Forums Placebo announced that Forums will be set to read-only from the 23th until the 29th of March in order to allow a smooth transition towards the new vBulletin forum software.

Howdy folks,
Following on from the recent beta testing of the new forums a few weeks ago, we're now making preparations for the final migration and move to the shiny new vBulletin forum software.
As such these forums will be turned to "read only" status for the period of Monday 23rd March - Sunday 29th March, this will allow us to move everything across to vBulletin without losing any posts, post counts, user accounts (hopefully! ).

Visually the new forums will look a little bit different from what you're used to as the software we use now is much older and of course different from the new software, we will however try to ensure that visually they're crisp use space as well as possible, the key improvements will be in terms of functionality, both for you as the end user and us as Admins/Moderators, the old forums really were like running Flashpoint1 in an ArmA2 world ;)

Furthermore Placebo has revived the Community Awards, which he had to delay because of a number of factors. You can now cast your vote about your favorite addon/mission/fansite/member for the upcoming 14 days.

Apologies for the really unfortunate delays which meant that the 2008 Community Awards ran on and on with no apparent conclusion, this was due to a number of factors but to skip to the chase, please check out the Community Blog Post which explains what we're doing now (ie 14 more days of nominating then 14 days of final voting).

  About Codemasters' marketing tactics Official

Marek Spanel , ArmA Project Lead has released an important post on the BI Forums.

THE NAME GAME: CODEMASTERS’ MARKETING OF NEW “OPERATION FLASHPOINT” CREATES CONFUSION, PROVOKES PROTEST

Is the upcoming Codemasters game really “the much anticipated return of the genre-defining military conflict simulator” Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis?
Is it really “the official sequel to the multi-award winning Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis”?
Bohemia Interactive says: “No! What matters is the game, not the name.”

Prague, Czech Republic, February 26, 2009 - In a letter from its attorneys to the English company The Codemasters Software Company Ltd, Bohemia Interactive Studio s.r.o., the leading Czech-based independent games developer, is protesting Codemasters’ marketing tactics which tout Codemasters’ upcoming game Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising as the “return of” or “official sequel to” the genre-defining game Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis.

The award-winning Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was created by Bohemia Interactive in 1997-2001. Bohemia Interactive licensed its creation to Codemasters to publish and distribute. Although Codemasters owns the “Operation Flashpoint” trade mark and plans to release its new game under that title, Bohemia Interactive has always owned 100% of the original OFP game. Bohemia also provided gaming community complete set of editing tools and on-going support that turned the original OFP into one of the most modded PC games ever. Codemasters owns only the name – and Bohemia Interactive wants fans to understand that Codemasters’ new game is not from the same development team that brought them the classic original.

“In the license agreement, Bohemia Interactive expressly reserved the exclusive right to develop sequels to the original OFP game,” says Leora Herrmann of Kluger, Peretz, Kaplan & Berlin, PL in Miami, attorneys for Bohemia Interactive. “Codemasters also acknowledged that Bohemia owns all the intellectual property in the game – except the words ‘Operation Flashpoint’,” adds Herrmann.

“Since Codemasters has no right to use the Bohemia Interactive game engine or any other component of the Bohemia-developed game, how can it rightfully claim to produce a ‘sequel’?” asks Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Spanel.

Because Codemasters owns the trade mark “Operation Flashpoint,” Bohemia Interactive cannot use the name for its own sequels. Instead, ArmA, released in 2007 and already adopted by the modding community, is powered by the second generation of the Bohemia game engine. Bohemia Interactive is currently working on its latest revolutionary re-creation of modern military conflict – ArmA II, due out later this year– which will be powered by the third generation of its engine and is based on the same original design concepts and artistic style of Bohemia Interactive’s legendary releases OFP: Cold War Crisis and OFP: Resistance.

In fact, the ground-breaking game engine that Bohemia Interactive launched initially in OFP: Cold War Crisis has spawned not only ArmA and the upcoming state-of-the-art ArmA II, but in its most sophisticated incarnation to date also powers Bohemia Interactive’s VBS combat training simulators used by armed forces around the world, including the recently announced Game After Ambush training program for the US Army.

“We can’t stop Codemasters from releasing a game using the words ‘Operation Flashpoint,’” acknowledged Spanel. “But it is not right to promote this game as the ‘official sequel to the multi-award winning Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis’ or the ‘return’ of Bohemia Interactive’s ‘genre-defining military conflict simulator.’ The awards were given for the game created by Bohemia Interactive - not to a name.”

A new BI Forums on beta-test Official

Jerry Hopper from Armed Assault.eu web site has informed us about the launch of the public beta test for renewed BI Forums on the ... Bi Forums by Jennick a BI Developper :

Greetings fellow soldiers!

This forum and its servers have been active for a very long time, we’re proud that these days there are more than 50,000 members. However, such an amount of users and traffic is going to be too heavy a task for an old fashion Ikonboard engine. This forum definitely deserves a new engine and location.

It's my pleasure that I can now introduce you to the public beta of our new Bohemia Interactive forums! Before the official opening, we would like to ask for your help to beta-test.

Go to BI Forums on public beta test

Forum will be reset again

Note: Any post and threads made on the new forum, account changes, passwords, modifications etc. at the Public Beta Forums will be lost once the forum will be upgraded as the primary forum. Use the new forum only for testing, not for real discussion, this stays here on the old forum until further notice.

Please, pay attention to these known issues:

1) Passwords don't work - You need to use Password Reminder at the new forum to reset your password. Keep in mind you will need the email address you used for registration at this (old) forum. If you no longer have access to the Email address in your account here then send Placebo a PM with your new Email address and he will change it manually for you, please do not attempt to manually change your Email address as that will make your account inactive due to an Ikonboard bug.

2) Broken BBcode signatures - - Might be corrected in final version, but most probably you will need to change them yourself.

3) Broken user names - If your user name contains non-standard characters it might not work at the new forum. We expect that around 100 users could potentially experience this issue. Fortunately, this doesn't mean these accounts will be unavailable; we already have a solution which will correct this issue in for the final public version.

4) User groups - It might be that your account will not be correctly moved to the original user group. This will be corrected in the final version.

5) Moderating rights - - If the moderators experience some issues or limitations, report it to the Moderating Forum here.

! Please, report to this topic any other issues or limitations you may encounter

Do you know Linda ? Official

Jerry Hopper and Kenwort have informed us about Linda release. Of course this is not directly related to our favourite game, but ...
With Linda, Bohemia Interactive Studio has released an impressive "Realistic vegetation creation system for realtime visualisations, games, simulations or CG generated nature" now offered as a service.

Linda is a system for generating highly realistic vegetation for use in realtime or massive offline rendering.

The main advantages are in terms of simulation based on real biological processes and the possibility to generate models in any detail from hipoly to lowpoply, with corresponding LODs as well as user control of specified details on the tree body. Lindastudio also contain tools for analysing models for performance dependency, measuring surface and volume, reducing number of textures and sections. Vertex numbers analysis, video memory load and so on.

The tools generate models in FBX format with diffuse and normal textures and also 2. UV for specific lightmaps, there is no need for specific changes in a customer’s engine. Automatic generation of shadow or physics LODs are also supported. Creation of vegetation is now offered as a service.

But in fact it's is related to ArmA 2 for the next pictures are rendered in "Real Time ArmA 2 Engine"
Have a look on Linda page : HERE and on the "New BIS service available, vegetation generating service" BI Forums topic

Arma Patch & Support Plans III - Developer Blog Official
BI Studio has posted an update on the official developer's blog about their plans for a new Arma patch.

-Vista 4gb + ATI problems will be fixed
-Multiplayer join-in-progress will be fixed
-Dedicated server bandwidth control will be fixed
These fixes will also be incorporated into Arma II as well.

A community configuration project will be started, so members of the community can help contribute to the final patch config files:

"Community Configuration Project
As part of this patch, we would like to formalize community oriented approach towards fixing and improving some of the aspects of the game configuration files. [...] we hope to see a few simple config fixes contributed by the community in the final patch."

This will probably be the last Arma patch unless a game-stopping bug is found.

Each side has one commander, who can build factories and defensive structures in and around their base. As long as they have enough money and resources, players can use these factories to build units, weapons and vehicles. Defensive structures can be used to defend bases and the units stationed there.

Players must take account of logistical considerations outside their bases and cities too as truck convoys ferrying supplies between settlements are vulnerable to attack.

Players on each side are divided into a maximum of 16 teams. The commander can give these teams side missions and specify tasks or objectives, coordinating the entire side to ensure victory.

This is war on a unprecedented scale, even for ARMA!

  William Porter update Official

William Porter has once again updated his blog! It seems that the conflict has ended and he's ready to return back home!

Epilogue

Halfway into Bagango we started taking fire from some SLA troops dressed in Royal uniforms. For a moment, I thought we’d been suckered into some horrible trap. Soon enough, though, we figured it out.

...now I’m looking forward to a little boredom and to being assigned to Fort Living Room for a good, long while.

  William Porter update Official

William Porter has updated one more time his blog. Seems that conflict could end soon ! Stay safe Willy!

Running Prey to Ground

The SLA is running like a crack addict on COPS. Everywhere we push, they give way. We’re already setting up a US base in Tandago—which is north of their capital—and from there we’re heading to Eponia. At that point, we’ll have all of Bagango surrounded.

You might think that Torres would surrender then. That’s the hope at least. I don’t know though. That would mean he’s a lot smarter than he’s seemed so far.
