The island uses ArmA's satellite and mask texture technology. This results in dynamic interaction of satellite, detail textures and placement of clutters.
I think that this is where you get the darkness on the ground textures. With other terrains that are done using satellite data I noticed that the real roads and rivers are showing in the texture, same for buildings and other things, like woods and small tree concentrations. Looks like the author don´t actually take advantage of them marks to place ArmA´s trees and roads, and instead they are placed along the same area, so if you fly high enought you can actually see all this from the air. I´m talking about Iraq-Iran Border map and specially on Saltbeach Island. Example They good maps thou.
