  ArmA 2: More news Screenshots

The German magazine PC Action has released another report about ArmA's successor on their website. They unveil some interesting features of ArmA 2 as well as a bunch of new screenshots from the game.

Here is a translation:

All facts and pictures for the OFP-rival

Operation Flashpoint was great, Armed Assault rather so-so. Does ArmA 2 reclaim old virtues? We have tested it.

When you hear "Czech Republic" you just have Becherovka in mind and you think that "Prague spring" is a local weather phenomenon? Disappointing! There is so much from the Czech republic (it indeed is a republic) you should have heard of: Mafia, Operation Flashpoint or Bus Driver (a popular present for your enemies)! Or maybe „Armed Assault“. It is excuseable if you did not know the latter title, this one has been missed by many gamers. It was not able to meet all expectations due to Operation Flashpoint, the awesome debut work of Bohemia Interactive – after all, Armed Assault was referred to as an unofficial sucessor (However, ex-publisher Codemasters owns all name copyrights). Nowadays new hope is raised by ArmA2, the abbreviation of the new title. All-time archenemy Operation Flashpoint 2 is supposed to be released in early 2009 just alike, but here the ifs and the whens have not been resolved yet. Additionally the Codemasters-team has never developed a similiar game before.

Welcome to the real world!

One who is not aware of the series must know: ArmA 2 is a military simulation with tactical, non-linear battles. You could even say, the Bohemian work is the holy grail of tactical shooters! „Many people ask what ‚Arma’ means, they complain it is no english word. ‚Arma’ is Latin for ‚war’ and also means ‚weapon’ in many languages. This is no joke, we create a serious game!“, Marek Spanel, the Bohemia Interactive executive says. By the way, it is serious enough for the United States Marine Corps and the Canadian Armed Forces to use a more professional spin-off to train their soldiers. ArmA 2 simulates 81 versions of weapons and 136 of vehicles. Despite of many shortcomings and boring lengths, the realistic game world is more fascinating than anything else offered by average shooters. In ArmA 2 comrades will come to your rescue if you have been hit so occasional players do not become totally frustrated – you’ll have your stuffing knocked out faster than Samuel Peter in a fight against Vitali Klitschko.

I’m so free

In the crosshairs: Our boss

Instead of playing many characters like in Operation Flashpoint, you will permanently be a part of „Team Razor“. In the campaign playing in 2009, this five men team is deployed to the Russian-style state of Chernarus which is politically falling apart and features virtual 225 square kilometres of accessible territory with 50 towns and villages. As before you play an infantry man and control war machinery like helicopters, tanks, boats and now even VTOL-planes. So much to the storyline: Your team leader dies, so you assume command. Video sequences make the story more interesting and your decisions and mission results affect the conflict as well as the end of the game. If you occupy a town for example, you can gather more ressources to buy weapons and you can interact with the local population.

It’s shining in blue

Of course we wanted to know from the developers what is new in the game in comparison to Armed Assault – and at first it was all Greek to us. For example they have created a „Micro AI“ now. Oh well! The background is: Up to now all commanders had their problems with the inept computer comrades. Now the AI does not navigate in scales of metres (Macro) anymore but centimetre-exactly (wohoo!). Good! Other mysterious additions are for example things called „Mega SEF“ and „Halo insertion“. „Mega SEF“ provides improved, 3D-sound that resembles your position in your environment and HALO insertion is a certain paratrooper technique, meaning to jump from high altitudes and to open the parachute only little above the ground. Regular soldiers have simple parachutes whilst special forces troopers have controllable glider parachutes. Other improvements which were more easy to understand are the new gestures system, the ability of the game character to jump over small obstacles, or that frightened enemies now do give up or run away. And whose shot at is affected by a shrinking accuracy. However, probably the most phenomenal improvement we have saved for the end of our report is the cooperative game mode for the campaign. This could actually become a real blast – especially in the view of the possibility that now AI soldiers maybe won’t drive their jeeps into mountains anymore, but still into rocks.

A more detailed review will be published later on in the upcoming printed PC Action edition!

Furthermore Barely-injured posted a very interesting link on the BIS Forums. It is linking to a YouTube channel where several unknown videos can be seen. Apparently the videos have been recorded during the GC in Leipzig. The audio and video quality aren't very good though ;).

You can view the other videos by following this link

Update : stilpu posted a link to another (better quality) YouTube video in which we can see ingame footage + comments by Ivan Buchta

Furthermore Suma from BIS left a comment concerning the Dual/Quad Core support of ArmA 2 in the BIS Forums.
Thanks to Foxhound from Armaholic for finding the quote.

Currently I can provide only an estimation, for final words you still have to wait for later:

Our intention is to scale at least to some extent to quad cores (this means with quad cores you should have either better performance in some scenes than in dual cores). Therefore the game should run better on Quad Core compared to Dual Core assuming they both run at the same frequency.

That said, you can get higher frequency Dual Core for the same money as you could get Quad Core. My prediction is 3.3 GHz Dual Core will most likely run the game better than 2.5 GHz Quad Core, while both will cost you approximately the same.

One thing to note: different scenarios / workloads may show different performance patterns - e.g. it is possible missions with huge numbers of units will runner better on 2.5 GHz Quad Core than 3.3 GHz Dual Core.

Disclaimer: this is only a prediction and things can still change before the game is released.

ARMA II - UH-1Y Venom In-Game Sounds Official

Maruk has released two unedited sound samples on the BI Forums. They reveal improved interior and exterior sounds for the UH-1Y Venom in game.

Maruk, again. Thank you for your feedback to my previous post about ArmA II UH-1Y Venom in-game screenshots .

As you are already familiar with visual style and quality of Arma 2, I want to give you preview of another important aspect of the game, sound, that will probably be not getting that much attention from various popular gaming media sources (which I am confident will be providing a lot of coverage in coming months about Arma 2).

I admit that sound was not very strong asset in first Arma (and in fact, the sound system used in Real Virtuality 2 engine didn't change much from OFP, except moving from DirectSound3D to OpenAL) but we are aiming to change it dramatically this time. Sound improvements wasn't too obvious from our GC live demos (partly because of the loud environment on the show and partly because the sound part of the game is not really complete yet).

Two audio samples attached, as usually, these are genuine in-game sound recordings - my word for it . (Note that this sound fidelity is result of real-time combination of 44 different audio samples just for the engine/rotor take off and landing sequence of UH1, using our brand new flexible and powerful sound system implemented in Arma 2)

OFP/Arma/Arma2 Vehicle and soldier engine comparison Official
Here are some interesting screenshots showing comparison between OFP, Arma 1 and Arma 2 engines. On the first row you can see the Mi-24 from OFP, next to the Arma 1 Mi-8 and Arma 2 Mi-24.
On the second row you can see the OFP, Arma 1 and Arma 2 Humvees, then the soldiers in the 3 games !

Of course graphics is not what makes a game good or not but it is still impressive to see quality's progression since 2001 !

Armed Assault 2 "The new / old AI" Videos
Once again the Armabase.de team has released a video from the ArmA 2 GC presentation. This time Ivan Buchta showed them the old/new AI.

In fact the new AI is the Old Ai, but in Arma 2 the AI system has been improved a lot. Furthermore the so called Micro-KI has been added, which allows the AI soldier to react more realistic in a battle. That means the soldier will decide to flee when he is outnumbered, the soldiers take cover and secure their surroundings without receiving a command from the player. The Ai also use hand signals.

Another AI system that has been improved is the pathfinding. For example AI vehicles will drive on the right side of the road, there won#t be a collision with incoming traffic anymore.

Thanks to the Armabase.de team and of course BIS (especially Ivan Buchta) for showing them WIP ArmA 2 in detail.

Arma2 new information + video Screenshots

The folks from our partnersite Armabase.de have now finished proccessing their 3 hours of GC footage and released the first parts on their website. Furthermore W0lle visited the GC and wrote a personal preview after playing the game for a while.

1. A recorded ingame video about the new High Commander Modus :

The video is about a so called "High Commander Mode".
It has a length of 10 minutes, featuring a cool introduction by the armabase.de guys (although the noises are pretty loud) and also Elton (a silly german comedian... ) playing Guitar Hero at the end.

2. Questions and Answers Part 1

What System is needed? How does a System running ArmA 1 smooth challenge ArmA 2?

Basicly smooth is spread to different opinions. If you are a lucky guy and you owned a dual core cpu with some mainstream cards like (X1950Pro/2600XT/7800GTX/8600GT, equal wether DX 10 or 9), then you should be able to run ArmA 2 smooth with a resolution of 1280 width. I am not able to estimate other things. Necessary needed is a graphics card with shader model 3. There are people out there using a large scale monitor, but they only use mainstream cards – according to BIS you have no to be frightened. There will be a function implanted that will better upscale low resolutions. READ MORE

And last but not least W0lle visited the BIS stand and wrote a personal review after playing Arma 2 for a while :

I visited BIS at the GC on Friday. And what I've seen in the more then six hours was anything then I expected. Even though it was an early version, it was running very stable on both PCs except the one or other CTD. Compared to ArmA this is something totally different while familiar at the same time, with different lightning effects depending on the weather situation and time of day. You literally can feel a rain coming in for example...READ MORE

Edit: The video is now available in HQ

Arma 2 Video from the BIS stand @GC Videos

Raptor informed the community that Chriz6662 has submitted in a small video presenting ArmA 2 at the Games Convention to our colleagues of Armed-Assault.de. He has recorded a presentation made my Game TV. The video itself is in German but as it is a video so it speaks for itself (Keep in mind that it is WIP).

So now the time is come for the first video impression of ArmA2. The Video shows an ArmA2 presentation on the game-tv booth.

Note : They are first showing off the screenshots but later they show ingame video footage (we are cutting the first part out at the moment

Edit : Raptor wrote a short timeline, you can find it HERE
