  Chernarus: Intel about Military zones Screenshots

Tonight the Official ArmA II website has been once again updated with, this time, informations about the Military Zones.

Shortly after WWII, the small Red Army airport in the Northern province, designated for parachute training, expanded and gradually evolved into an air base with large military surroundings. In the border mountains there are a few former bases. After the regaining of independence, the Chernarussian Army took over these military bases.

At present, there is a lack of funds needed for security and maintenance; the condition of these bases has become even worse because of fighting between the regular army and rebel units who were using a number of these bases as their foot-holds. Visiting the former military areas isn't forbidden, but due to large numbers of unexploded ordnance as well as the decayed conditions of the buildings it is not recommended.

  Chernarus : Old sights revealed Screenshots

The ArmA2 website has been once more updated with, this time, the old sights section.

Chernarus has lots of old castle ruins, keeps and fortresses, which were built at the turn of the 11th and 12th century by Duke Kozlov, for the means of protecting important roads and grounds, which were often attacked from the sea and by northern neighbors. The Pik Kozlova above the Chernogorsk city is named after this duke, who is considered a founder of the first Chernarussian state. On the peak above the city there used to stand a warning post which protected the local provinces from pirate raids. This rocky peak is a favorite lookout point nowadays.

The majority of the structures of that time were made of wood, only the ruins of Rog keep and the famous Devil's Castle are preserved to this day. The Devil's Castle received its name many years later, perhaps sometime during the end of the 13th century. After the fall of Kozlov's Principate at the beginning of the 13th century, the fortress system fell apart; fortresses that weren't burned down were taken apart stone by stone, as needed for the structure of surrounding estates, or for different purposes.

The former Kozlovo Castle, now called the Devil's Castle, was supposedly inhabited by the yeoman Jakub Čert (Devil) from Gorka. His bandit campaigns started here at the castle. He enlarged the keep of the castle, using the loot from these raids and the castle holds his name to this day. According to legend, the Devil's Castle was burned down during the zagorian Karzeg's rebellion, Jakub Čert burned in the castle's main tower after he refused to surrender to Ataman Simurg. Only burned walls remain of the castle, haunted to this day by the spirit of Ivan Kozlov. Whatever the truth is, Devil's Castle is one of the most remarkable architectural sights in Chernarus and it became a rewarding destination for tourists.

  ARMA 2 - The Name Tale Screenshots

Marek Španěl has written a new entry in the Developer's blog about the name of the game "ArmA".

As we're quickly approaching the release of ARMA 2 , the third instalment in Bohemia Interactive's award winning series of military PC simulations, it's a good time to clarify some things about the name and also explain why using Armed Assault 2 is wrong or why Arma is not a cheesy weird name as some English-centric souls may believe!

The meaning of Arma
Arma is originally a Latin word:
arma (
genitive armōrum); n pl, second declension (plural only; not used in singular form)
1. defensive arms, armor/armour, shields, weapons of war.
2. war
3. soldiers, military power
4. defence
5. tools
(Source: wiktionary.org, where you can also find the meaning of the word in other languages. There are quite some other meanings, for example I remember that in the Czech Army, soldiers used the word "arma" for a small food shop usually available near their barracks. There is also a small village Arma in Kansas, but how that can be related to our game I simply don't know. )

  ArmA II Preview at IGN.com Screenshots

Under "ArmA II Hands-on" title, IGN.com has released a short preview of ArmA II by Jason Ocampo on the IGN.com site.

... ArmA came out in the US in 2007, and it felt very much like a sequel to the original Operation Flashpoint to the point that the graphics and the gameplay felt dated. So Bohemia went back to the drawing board and now have ArmA II coming out later this year. ArmA II will introduce vastly upgraded visuals as well as some new features. At the same time, we've been able to play around with ArmA II a bit, and the upgraded graphics are a nice touch. More importantly, this feels like an ArmA game (which basically means it feels like Operation Flashpoint), and that's good news to those who liked the immersive feel of those games.
...
The graphics engine is a lot better than before, but ArmA II still wouldn't be classified as a cutting-edge game. The art lacks the sheen of a high-end game. Still, where are excels is at creating huge, believable environments. There's nothing quite like staring across a valley floor and seeing a village in front of you, and cows herding in the fields around it. There are also some great effects, particularly with an extensive use of motion blur and the way your eyes adjust to light after putting on or taking off night vision goggles. Rough edges do exist, though. For example, there's a definite "uncanny valley" effect with the people in the game, as they have dead eyes and stiff movements. Unfortunately, the animations still feel rigid and the stilted way that people talk (they sound just like a computer is piecing together different recorded words to create a sentence) is pretty much unchanged since the original game. Still, there's a good sense of a realistic world here. And the good news is that it ran well at very high detail settings with an 8800GTX, which is practically a mid-range graphics card now.

Dslyecxi has released some breathtaking ArmA 2 screenshots on the BI Forums. Of course, he is using very high end equipment and doesn't tell us anything about his specs.

Since we're on the topic, wanted to chime in here and show some examples of what A2 looks like for me at 'very high' settings.

Games.Tiscali.cz has released new New ArmA II screenshots and a short comment from one redactor.

It looks like he tested the game on a PC having these specs: C2D 3 GHz, 4GB RAM and GF GTX-260 s 896 MB RAM, and tell us that on this PC, ArmA 2 was not running well on High and 1280x1024, and that he had to set lower resolution and normal details and disabled shadows and effects. After this he had 35-40 FPS.

The full review announced in the entry has been delete from Tiscali web site stated ohara, a BI Developer, on the BI Forums :

This preview was not correct, balanced and brake embargo for press, after our urge was deleted from Tiscali.

  The Armory in ArmA 2 Screenshots
The Developer's Blog has been updated by Joris-Jan van 't Land on the official Bohemia Interactive web Site.

The Armory
The interactive encyclopedia and sandbox mode for all content in the game is back in ARMA 2.

Some of you may have already played around in the Armory in ARMA 1, which was properly introduced in the North American release and consecutive patches for all territories. For those who are not familiar with the concept: the Armory allows you to select any vehicle, weapon and creature in the game and do a number of cool things with those items.

Not feeling very active, but want to see the item in action? Check out a dynamic Scene starring the item you selected. Want to inspect an item up close? Fire up the Viewer and rotate, pan and zoom to your heart’s content. In the end though, there’s nothing more fun than to just play around with the item and it goes without saying that this is possible too. Select an item and Try it out for yourself.

Item selection - Viewer mode

....
The Armory makes testing community content pretty much plug-and-play. With the add-on inserted into the game, the Armory will process it automatically.
....
In short the Armory’s goals are: have fun, learn about different types of content, explore community content and hone your skills. The overall gameplay experience is more arcade than the rest of the game, but we feel it’s a nice game mode if you feel like you need a little break from the main game.

Mobility Range - Checkpoint Race

So what’s new?
We’ve worked on many new features for the Armory and improved existing content as well. All in all the experience should be more fun than ever.
....
New challenges
This one was pretty easy to guess: we added new challenges and improved upon old challenges.

Firing Range - Fitness Track

* Steal the Item ...
* In Assassination ...
* The Kill House ....
* The Hunted challenge ....
* Other challenges include rapidly stopping your vehicle, performing an inside loop, moving a ship on land and reaching a target position quickly.

  ARMA 2 Vehicles : Ships and Boats Screenshots
The ArmA 2 vehicles pages has been updated with Boats on the ArmA 2 Official Web site.

Ships and boats

ArmA 2 offers a few small military boats, along with Chernarussian fishing boats.

Fishing Boat

Simple boat used to catch fish in the sea. According to the international Food and Agriculture Organization there are about 4 million of commercial fishing boats worldwide. This is one of them.

PBX

The PBX is a Combat Rubber Craft very similar to the CRRC in design. It is intended to be used for maritime raids and infiltration, as well as riverine operations.

RHIB (Mk19)

The Naval Special Warfare Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) is a fast, high-buoyancy all weather boat designed to transport a fully equipped team of eight men and three crew members. It is also fully transportable by C-130 Hercules. This one is equipped with an Mk 19, 40 mm grenade luncher.

Private small boat

Many Chernarussians own small private boats, which are mostly used for fishing and recreation. Treacherous currents and hidden rocks make these vessels perfect for navigation along the Chernarussian coastline.

  ARMA 2 Vehicles : Civilian vehicles Screenshots
Today, ArmA2 vehicles pages has been updated with Civilian vehicles on the ArmA 2 official web site.

Civilian vehicles

Civilians prefer to use the sturdy and easy to maintain Eastern European make car that they're familiar with, whether it is their personal family car, or the wood-hauling truck they use for work. Sadly due to the horrible conditions of the local roads most cars native to Chernarus are in poor condition.

Urban Cars

Want to haul some wood to your cottage, drive your spouse to a shop in Chernogorsk or sneak through checkpoints with several bottles of vodka stashed in a cardboard box? Either use a car of your choice or take a bus. If you see the white-yellow car behind you, put the pedal to the metal!

Cargo Transport

No matter what needs to be transported, the trucks can do it all: gravel, lemonade, guerillas or weapons.

Other

If you need to travel light, use a mountain bike! Tired of pedalling or in urgent need to escape the bad guys? Ride the motorbike!
